Who Bari is for

Bari suits couples and solo travelers for a short city break. For a family beach vacation, the smaller coastal towns are better. Walking is flat and easy.

When to go

The best months are April, May, October and November. March, June and September are good too. The weakest are July and August.

Getting around

Bari is Puglia’s transport hub: trains run from the airport to downtown and to coastal towns like Polignano a Mare and Monopoli. In town you walk.

What Bari costs

On a budget, about $100 to $125 per person per day. In comfort or luxury, about $330 to $350. The lower number is the quiet season, the higher one peak season.

Includes your stay, food, activities and local transport, not flights. Converted at about $1.10 per euro. Estimates only.

Flights from the US and Canada

Fly into: Bari (BRI). Typical economy fares per person, round trip, with a connection. Canadian fares are in Canadian dollars. Not live prices, so always check before you book.

What Bari does best

Its strengths: food and restaurants, wine and nightlife.

Day trips

Bari makes a good base for Puglia: trains run often along the coast, so you can stay in one hotel and do day trips.

MolfettaPolignano a MareMonopoliAlberobelloMateraGarganoBari
Molfettaabout 25 min by train

A fishing town whose old-town lanes are an experience in themselves.

Polignano a Mareabout 35 min by train

An old town built on the cliffs, and the Lama Monachile beach.

Monopoliabout 40 min by train

A harbor full of blue boats, and calmer than Polignano a Mare.

Alberobelloabout 1.5 h by train

The cone-roofed trulli, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Come in the morning before the tour buses.

Materaabout 1.5 h by train

The cave city carved into the rock, one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world.

We haven’t been here ourselves, so this is based on other travelers’ reports.

Gargano (overnight trip)about 2.5 h by car to Vieste

Too far for a day trip, but a great overnight: leave the big bags at the hotel and take one night’s things. The Gargano peninsula has white limestone cliffs, rock stacks rising from the sea and the old beech forest of Foresta Umbra. Vieste and Peschici are its best-known beach towns. A car is practically essential.

We picked these places from Google ratings and reviews in October 2026, and we haven’t eaten at all of them. Many Italian restaurants take reservations on WhatsApp, and a reservation only counts once they reply. The Map link opens the restaurant in Google Maps, where you’ll also find a booking button if they take online reservations. Opening hours change, so check before you go.

Food and wine

A day trip or a night in Molfetta

Molfetta is about 25 minutes from Bari. We had a wonderful room with a balcony right over the sea, and the town’s streets are an experience in themselves.
