Cagliari: hills, flamingos and friendly people
Updated October 2026

We spent a couple of nights in Cagliari on a week-long Sardinia trip, and left with good memories.
Cagliari at a glance
- Best time
- June, September
- Price level
- moderate
- Getting around
- walkable but hilly, a car for the coast
- Best for
- beaches, food and history
- The catch
- The old town is uphill all the way, and you need a car for the best beaches outside the city.
When to go
Temperatures are average daily highs in °F and °C (WeatherSpark). Ratings are our own. $ = cheapest, $$$ = most expensive. 🔥 = heat, ★ = big event.
A Fiat 500 and the hills
We took a ride in a restored Fiat 500, probably from the 1960s. In a couple of spots the hills were so steep that the driver had to work to get us to the top, as the little car nearly ran out of power. The city is full of hills and narrow streets between the houses, but the Fiat 500 fit through easily.
Poetto and the flamingos
Poetto beach was so packed that there was just room for our towel, and that’s it. We also remember the flamingos, lots of them. They were paler than the ones in Aruba, by the way.
Fun fact: flamingos get their color from their food, shrimp and algae whose pigments build up in the feathers. The American flamingo in Aruba is naturally a deeper red than Sardinia’s greater flamingo.
We’d go back
The people were really friendly, and the main thing that stuck with us: we’d go back.

Cagliari makes a good base for southern Sardinia, best with a car for the beaches.

Where to eat
Breakfast and brunch
Lunch
Dinner
We picked these places from Google ratings and reviews in October 2026, and we haven’t eaten at all of them. Many Italian restaurants take reservations on WhatsApp, and a reservation only counts once they reply. The Map link opens the restaurant in Google Maps, where you’ll also find a booking button if they take online reservations. Opening hours change, so check before you go.
Food and wine
Sardinia on a plate: a typical four-course menu, and the wine to go with each.
Soccer
Even if soccer isn’t your sport, a home game is one of the best evenings you can have in Italy: the singing, the flags, the whole crowd living every pass. Tickets usually cost a fraction of a pro game in the US or Canada.
- Cagliari, Serie A, in town · Tickets
Kickoff times are set only a few weeks ahead, so check the club’s website for the schedule.
Golf
Green fees are estimates and vary by season and day of the week. Most courses ask for a handicap certificate. The links go to the course or a golf directory with booking and contact details.
Shopping
- Via Garibaldi: the city’s shopping street. 📍 Map
- Mercato di San Benedetto: a big covered food market. 📍 Map
Culture and events
- The Sant’Efisio procession, May 1: Sardinia’s biggest traditional procession, with thousands in folk costume. The downtown streets are packed in the morning.
Check the exact dates on the event’s own website, as they can change from year to year.
