Who Chianti is for
Chianti is excellent for couples who want wine estates and long lunches. It works for families, but solo travelers may find the evenings too quiet. There are some hills.
When to go
The best months are May, September and October. April and June are good too. The weakest are January, February, July, August and December.
Getting around
A car is practically essential: the villages and estates are far apart, and public transport is poor. Without a car, join an organized wine tour from Florence.
What Chianti costs
On a budget, about $110 to $145 per person per day. In comfort or luxury, about $330 to $440. The lower number is the quiet season, the higher one peak season.
Includes your stay, food, activities and local transport, not flights. Converted at about $1.10 per euro. Estimates only.
Flights from the US and Canada
Fly into: Florence (FLR) or Pisa (PSA). Typical economy fares per person, round trip, with a connection. Canadian fares are in Canadian dollars. Not live prices, so always check before you book.
What Chianti does best
Its strengths: food and restaurants, and wine.
Soccer in the 2026-27 season: Fiorentina (Serie A, about 45 min). The season runs from late August to May.
Day trips
With a car, Chianti is a wonderful base between Florence and Siena.
The dome, Ponte Vecchio and the Uffizi. Park on the edge of town, because you can’t drive into the center.
Piazza del Campo and the striped cathedral.
We haven’t been here ourselves, so this is based on other travelers’ reports.
Medieval towers and Vernaccia white wine. Come early, before the tour buses.

The home village of Brunello di Montalcino. Book tastings ahead.

Where to eat
Breakfast and brunch

Dinner
We picked these places from Google ratings and reviews in October 2026, and we haven’t eaten at all of them. Many Italian restaurants take reservations on WhatsApp, and a reservation only counts once they reply. The Map link opens the restaurant in Google Maps, where you’ll also find a booking button if they take online reservations. Opening hours change, so check before you go.
Food and wine
Tuscany on a plate: a typical four-course menu, and the wine to go with each.
Soccer
Even if soccer isn’t your sport, a home game is one of the best evenings you can have in Italy: the singing, the flags, the whole crowd living every pass. Tickets usually cost a fraction of a pro game in the US or Canada.
- Fiorentina, Serie A, about 45 min away · Tickets
Kickoff times are set only a few weeks ahead, so check the club’s website for the schedule.
Golf
Green fees are estimates and vary by season and day of the week. Most courses ask for a handicap certificate. The links go to the course or a golf directory with booking and contact details.
Shopping
- Wine estates: buy the best souvenirs straight from the estate after a tasting. Many will ship wine home, so ask about shipping to the US or Canada.
- Olive oil: fresh oil after the fall harvest is the area’s best souvenir.
Culture and events
- Teatro del Silenzio, Lajatico, late July: Andrea Bocelli’s yearly open-air concerts in the hills of his home village, about 8,000 people a night. Tickets sell out early. About an hour’s drive from Chianti.
- The grape harvest, September to early October: the estates are busy, but you can often see the harvest on a visit.
- Expo del Chianti Classico, September in Greve in Chianti: the area’s biggest wine festival. Greve gets busy, with little effect elsewhere.
Check the exact dates on the event’s own website, as they can change from year to year.
